Winter shoe sale!

Octavia and her Italian sample shoes are back! Her pop-up shop is the former Mui Wo Bike Shop between Renge House and Lantau Base Camp. I was so excited I got there before she had unpacked everything.

She has loads of Size 40 and 41 winter boots available.  So for you Cinderellas out there, better make inroads. There were crowds just two hours in, with people grabbing straight from the boxes. She's selling Italian leather boots for around HK$400.

The shop is opened until January 23.

Epiphany Church jumble sale is back!

This is the sale I've been waiting all year for. And I wasn't the only one. I passed the church at 9.30am and there were already people milling outside.

It was so packed at 11am that I had to elbow my way in. Why is it so popular? Clothes are HK$10 for four, the better quality pieces are HK$20 each and suits/coats are HK$100. You can emerge with huge bin bags full of stuff and still have spent less than HK$100.

Homeware was less than HK$20.

 And books and CDs started from HK$2 each.

 Is it any wonder I went in there four times today and am planning just as many trips tomorrow?

Flea market at Garden Plus

Sorry for the pathetic number of photos. For the first time, I was a seller so I actually had to stay in my stall to make sure I got enough money to spend.

 

It was great fun. Good atmosphere and a great mix of stuff on sale.

Even Buffalo Wilbur was hooked. I thought he'd get bored after an hour or so but he stayed with me till the end. Can we have more please?

GardenPlus market

Sorry I haven't been updating the blog recently. Have had a lot of things happening on the family front so haven't had the heart to blog.

But anyway, there's a marvellous new Facebook page that has all the current events, news, gossip etc on Mui Wo and its surroundings. It's a closed group but the admins are very nice people and will let you in if you ask politely.

I've been getting most of my news from there... ever since we lost Lantau Linker Diane Stormont. :(

Finally, the flea market...

Perfect weather for the Discovery Bay flea market this time. Ok, a bit too hot but better than last week.

Next one's in about two months' time.

May fairs

Handmade Hong Kong's fair is on Mother's Day. They have some unique stuff.

And this one I have already marked in my diary. A charity market at the Mui Wo Church in Chung Hau Village. Buffalo Wilbur ain't gonna be allowed to sleep in that Saturday.

Flea market at Garden Plus

Buffalo Wilbur just couldn't get out of bed today and we almost missed the flea market at Garden Plus in Pui O. But I forced him out because I told him PALS was setting up a store there and he's a big supporter.

The bad thing about being late was that we missed the vegetarian buffet and some of the better buys. The good thing was that we got quite good bargains as everyone was ready to pack up and go home. I scored some really good chicklit at only HK$10 a book.

And we did manage to persuade the vegetarian buffet folks to sell us some dishes... the vegetarian noodles were so good I went back for more to put into tomorrow's lunch box.

The Garden Plu flea market did have a nice atmosphere. There are tables set up for you to have a meal and basically just chill out... which is what Buffalo Wilbur did while I went bargain hunting.

There weren't very many people around, probably because it was near closing time. But I think they could build up quite a crowd if they held this regularly. Maybe one Sunday a month?

Church flea market

My favorite flea market is here! I turfed Buffalo Wilbur from our bed, where he was having a lie in, super early so that I could get there in time for the first wave of bargains. 

Clothes at three for HK$10, books at HK$5 each... there's even a yummy Thai salad for HK$20.  Today's market will last till 4pm and there's another day tomorrow (when teh clothes are going to be much cheaper, I suspect) so don't forget to hop on over.

September flea market

This is the first time the flea market is being held on a Saturday -- which was good news for me because the kaido to Discovery Bay is only HK$12 instead of HK$15 (hey, a savings of HK$3 x 2 can get me a CD of Best Driving Hits so don't knock it).

 

The organisers also combined it with the equally popular Homemade Fair so it made the trip twice as worthwhile.

For those who think that this looks good, there's still time to head on down. The flea market only closes at 6pm and some vendors usually linger on till later.

This time, Buffalo Wilbur was smart. Instead of trudging from stall to stall with me in the heat, he holed himself up in Il Bel Paese with a nice meatball spaghetti. I used him as a pit stop so I could shop, dump goods at his feet, go shop some more... talk about a win-win situation!

 The next one is on September 22 -- a Saturday. The weather should be nice and cool by then.

DB Handmade fair

The sun was out and the temperature was just nice for a fair: Handmade Hong Kong at Discovery Bay. 

I must say that, despite it being called "handmade", most of the items were pretty high quality – not surprisingly, some of the vendors also sell in mainstream shops such as Dymocks.

I coveted these bean bags so much, especially seeing as you can personalise your covers, but our flat is way too small for one.

Aren't these earrings lovely? At HK$20, they make wonderful presents for nieces!

Frilly beanbags... can they get any cuter?

The piazza was packed because they were also having an Action Asia Triathlon.
