It's raining again...

This has been my view on the ferry the past few days. Looks quite apocalyptic. 

Speaking of apocalyptic rainstorms, have you seen this dramatic video of Sunday's black rainstorm by blogger Ka Ki Wong?

If you're going to leave your trash on the ferry...

... at least make sure it looks like a work of art.

Cheung Chau day trip

Some lovely houses on the hillside. I wanted one and then Buffalo Wilbur pointed out an old woman huffing and puffing uphill. Nah!

 Lunch at a Thai-Indonesian place. Food tastes Cantonese. Very strange.

Looks like Cheung Chau is ready for Christmas.

Mui Wo-Chi Ma Wan-Cheung Chau

It was such a lovely day that we decided to take advantage of the little-used Inter-Island Ferry to do a spot of island hopping. We walked from Mui Wo to Chi Ma Wan, stopping to say hi to some residents at Shap Long.

Chi Ma Wan ferry pier. I wonder how many people actually use this pier now that the prison has closed.

We wanted to do Cheung Chau-Pend Chau but got distracted by the all-day breakfast at Rainbow Cafe (HK$60).

And chocolate lava cake (HK$40).

The food was good and cheap... can we have something similar in Mui Wo?

Typhoon Utor hits South Lantau

The bay looked quite calm so I thought the ferry folks were a bit wussy not starting up the ferries again until 3.30pm. Then I saw Cheung Sha beach from the top of the pass...

 It had all but disappeared. The waves coming in looked like something from the 2011 Japanese tsunami.

I white-knuckled it on the ferry ride home. The big ferry was pitching and swaying so much I almost thought we would tip over, like the Trans Summer.

Then I looked across and all my ferrymates  were glued on their smartphones or asleep so I told myself I was being a wuss. But never have I stepped on the pier with such relief before.

My friend said that on the ride to Central the next day, the poor mainland tourists (unused to sea trips) were throwing up onboard. One nearly threw up on him as they walked through the gangplank to disembark.

Cheung Chau on Labour Day

We were at a bit of a loose end as to what to do for Labour Day until Buffalo Wilbur got struck by the brilliant idea of taking the inter-island ferry to Cheung Chau. It seemed a lot of other people got the same idea as the ferry was quite crowded (for an inter-island ferry, that is).

It was an inspired choice. Cheung Chau was bustling.

The famous buns were everywhere.

People queueing up fo fishballs. Apparently Cheung Chau is known for its giant fishballs. I tasted some and they didn't taste that different from the normal-sized ones.

Something lurking round the corner...

I don't know about you but this guy scared the beejeezus out of me when I first saw him lurking round the corner. What is the point of the display anyway? Do not steal lifejackets or this bogeyman will get you?
